REVIEW | YSL Volupté Liquid Balm

I’ve wanted to try YSL lip products for a while, so I was, of course, elated to get a notification from Influenster that I’d be receiving the Volupté Liquid Balm (0.2 oz, $32) for free to try and review. First of all, the fact that this is supposed to be a liquid lip balm is pretty amazing, and I had high hopes for this, considering that it has a bunch of great, moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, vitamin E, coconut water, and jojoba oil.

I got the shade Devour Me Plum, and I’m not gonna lie, I was concerned how the shade would work with my lips and face, since I associate plum with purple, which is a color that I don’t find flattering on myself. When I took the tube out of the box and saw that the color was more magenta than purple, my concern lessened, but the fact that it was a cool-toned shade still kept me a bit skeptical.

My concern was pretty unnecessary, as I soon found out when I swatched the lip color on my arm. The shade was less cool-toned than it appeared in the tube, and the formula of the product was pretty sheer.

I’ve worn this on my lips a few times now, and I’m pretty impressed with it. It definitely feels like a glossy lip balm, which is what it claims to be. It’s very moisturizing on the lips, and I love that I don’t have to sacrifice comfort for a nice lip color. I also love that a precise application isn’t needed. Usually, I use the doe foot applicator to focus the product on the center of my lips, and then I use my finger to blend out the color to the rest of my lips.

The wear isn’t amazing, but it’s pretty great for what it is. The glossy balm itself doesn’t stay on for long, but after that fades, you’ll still have a nice stain on your lips. The stain has decent wear time but definitely won’t survive an oily meal.

Though I’m not usually a fan of scented products, I do think the scent is quite nice – it’s a strong fruity scent, which I’ve learned is actually a signature of YSL lip products – and it’s much better than putting on a product that just smells and tastes of chemicals.

After having used the product, I finally went to look at the Sephora page for it and saw that they described “Devour Me Plum” as a mauve nude. I would definitely say it is not any type of nude – it’s more of a sheer wash of magenta. If this type of lip product floats your boat but this shade doesn’t, there are eleven other shades from which you can choose.

So, overall, would I recommend this product?

Yes, but only if you feel like having a “treat yourself” moment. I think it’s a great product, but it’s pretty up there in price.

Have you tried the Volupté Liquid Balm, and if you have, what did you think?
